Something in Common

Hello everyone, I am new to this site and I am glad to be a part. I feel that the blogs I have read so far are so familiar. Pain is a part of life when you have SC but it is not life. I really look forward to getting to know more people with SC and sharing their stories.

I have one question for people living with SC over 40. I will be soon forty next year and wanted to know if your pain got worst or better as you got older? I have learned over the years to manage my pain a…

Speak

“When we speak we are afraid our words will not be heard or welcomed. But when we are silent, we are still afraid. So it is better to speak.” ~Audre Lorde

As my 41st birthday approaches, I am reflecting on my life since September 22nd of last year. I am amazed and even a little proud of how much I've grown and learned about myself...and about sickle cell.…

Say Something

It deeply saddens me that there are so many of us who still suffer in silence. I know what its like to feel like you are all alone in the struggle to be well, maintain, manage and cope with having SC. I understand the constant battle to live a 'normal', productive and uninterrupted life.

Likewise, I also know that it can be difficult to keep a positive attitude. To focus on what is good and right in your life instead of the pain and what you…

Perhaps the most important thing we can undertake toward the reduction of fear is to make it easier for people to accept themselves, to like themselves.

Marijuana...for Medicinal Purposes, of course ;-)

I am wondering if anyone on this forumn has done or heard of research on the medicinal value of smoking marijuana? I have always smoked marijuana - long before I knew what the world medicinal meant - but it was mainly because I wanted to. I enjoyed it.

Now, I honestly believe that my smoking marijuana aids me in managing SC in many ways. Not only does it serve as a buffer to stress, it also helps me sleep and makes it more bearable to endure the constant, everyday pain in…

The Reason Sickle Cell Patients Have A Bad Rep

I just got home from the Sickle Cell crisis center at Grady and while I'm now 100% pain free I'm utterly drained. I got zero sleep last night there were many reasons but the main reason was the patient across from me who was a classic example of why Sickle Cell patients gets such a bad name. She came in around 1Am and was a horrible patient from the minute she came in. She came in crying loudly which honestly didn't bother me, I've shed plenty of tears over this disease and while I prefer to… Continue

Should a Sickle Cell Trait Person Marry Someone with Sickle Cell?

There is a hot topic over at the UKGreat Sickle Cell forum on FB. A

gentleman posted this question: My genotype is SS and my fiance is

AS. I love this girl very much because of her character. I intend to

marry her. Should I go on? I need your candid advice.

I have very strong views about this as a sickle cell warrior. I have

seen too many people with sickle cell get relegated to a lonely corner,

dumped, and heartbroken just because of their genetic… Continue

Location

Hi All,

I am new to this site but I love what I see already. I am so happy I found this and it's comforting to know I can reach out to others just like me living with sc.

I wanted to know if anyone lives in the Bay Area of Ca? I am asking because I would like to connect with you (I want to connect with everyone really), but I tend to have a hard time with not having people close to me in which I would like to meet up with from time to time.

I hope…

The Same Pain, Stronger Medication Needed

Building a tolerance to your pain meds is common with Sickle Cell, but something I'm only starting to notice in myself. Now my history with Sickle Cell isn't all too terrible compared to some. I was often sick as a child with frequent hospitalizations for pain crisis. I've had Acute 3x and been hospitalized with the flu and pneumonia often as well. I also had my gallbladder removed. The majority of this happened to me as a kid and teen from 3-16.

I went through a period from the age… Continue

in & out

So I really don't know what to say about the past few months and whats goin on with my sickle cell. I have never had this much happen to me in such a short span of time...on New year's eve the doctors told me that the knot on my hip was an abscess that was infected! ok...antibiotics and I'll be good is what I was thinking. Nope surgery all from a nurse who gave my phenergan injections IM (intra- muscular) in the same spot and it never absorbed into my muscle. i walked away with a nice wound… Continue
