So one thing that is important to me, is belly dance. I've been doing it for about 2.5 years now. I'm not a professional dancer, nor am I in any troupe, but I take classes, and dance at the Hafla's and various student shows. Its just a fun hobby. Its also one that is responsible for a giant boost of self confidence in myself. Before I started dancing, It could be said that I really didn't feel to good about myself. I was a bit insecure about my weight, even though I really wasn't that big, at my biggest I was maybe 180lbs.

I started belly dancing because it was always something I saw and admired. So one day I decided to go for it and take a class. Initially I was really nervous and insecure, but the teachers at the studio were great. They all had positive and uplifting energy, and they would constantly say that no matter your size, age or race that belly dance is something every woman can do. It didn't take long for the dance itself and the positive attitude I was getting from the teachers to make me love it. Even better was the fact that in the studio you have women of all shapes and sizes not afraid to pull their shirts up and dance. I quickly developed a new attitude about myself, and dancing really made me feel great, not to mention the weight I have lost, and the way belly dancing sculpted my body.

Now that I have a basic knowledge of the dance, I'm trying to explore the dance more, use props and figure out what style do I want to dance. Belly Dancing in the U.S has 3 major forms: Cabaret, American Tribal Style and Tribal Fusion with their being many more substyles beside those three. I'm not really fond of American Tribal Style, however Cabaret and Tribal Fusion fascinate me.

I post about this because I love this dance, and I fear being diagnosed with AVN in my hips. Belly dance is all in the hips, and if my hips are wearing out on me then I won't be able to dance.

Nana, I love your blog post. Belly dancing sounds like it is something really fun and motivating for you. I have to see about finding some kind of dance activity like that. Being active is actually a positive against developing AVN. You are increasing the blood circulation to your hips thereby reducing the chance of necrosis (death to bone tissue). I'm not saying that it rules it out completely, but I don't think it should be something to be overly worried about unless you are already having symptoms. Keep dancing girl!
