it varies depending on the person.
children/teens tend to have a lower "normal" count

ask your hematologist what your avg Hb level is.
Hi,
I read some scientific paper that say the hgb level for SCD patient can be about 6-14 depend on the SCD type the person have and in Sickle Cell Anemia that level can be around 6-9 depending of the haplotype of Sc the person carries.
it varies but i run no higher than a 9 at best
It truly does vary. If I'm an 8, I'm good. If I'm a 9...I'm stoked! I've been 10-12 before but only after massive transfusions...the lowest I've ever dropped was to a 4---that was not cool, I almost died. I only get transfused if I'm below 6 (tryna keep the # of transfusions to a minimum!). It just depends on the person's body really. It's good for you to know what your zone is so when you go to the hospital you can tell the docs whether or not you feel u need a transfusion.

Nina, if you can get your hands on the title of that paper you read....it would be good to add to my personal SCD library. Thanks!
Hey, the paper is in Portuguese but you can see the #. I'm sending you some of those paper I've read. Hope it's will be useful.

Thanks! Now I have to figure out how to translate it...lol
My daughter had a count of 10 the last time we checked. She's never had a transfusion. The doctor was amazed. Is this unusual for an infant with SCD?
When I was a child, I had excellent normal HG levels. It wasn't until I hit puberty that my hemoglobin tanked. I read somewhere that infants and children have high levels of alphafetalproteins AFPs, which increase red blood cell production...I never followed up on that line of knowledge though, but you could look into it.
I never knew about the High Foetal Haemoglobin count till I went for a check-up here in London and it's quite surprising cause I was told I had a count of 20 and i'm 24. Infact I'm still gonna go for more tests again to make sure its not an inconsistency.

I was told SCD sufferers in the Middle East usually have a high Hb level as compared to people from West Africa.
Bolaji,

Are you sure that was the hemoglobin? It sounds like it was your hematocrit that was 20/24. If your HCT was between 20-24, then that would make your HGB around 6.8-8.4. This is more in the SCD zone...

Hemoglobin (Hgb) is the iron-containing protein that bonds with oxygen, allowing the red blood cells to transport oxygen throughout the body.Hemoglobin for a regular male is usually in the 14-18 g/dl. For women it's 12-16. zone.

Hematocrit (HCT), sometimes called Packed cell Volume, or PVC) measures the portion of blood volume made up by red blood cells. For men the normal range is usually is 40 to 54 percent. For women it's 37 to 47 percent.

I used to get the two mixed up all the time. I just remember that HGB is the lower number and HCT is the larger number.
I think so...? Cause she said it my fetal hemoglobin count was only usually found in babies and people from the Middle East and was probably a reason for my being able to cope with a pain episode most of the time without being admitted. That's why I still had to take an other test to be for it to be confirmed.

I haven't seen a hematologist so I cant be too sure.
