Are sicklers 'brighter' in academic work than the regular non SCD person.?

Upon being told that my son had SCD, i had many advisers, sypathisers etc but i never expected anyone to tell me that at least i didnt have to worry about my child being 'dull' at school. I have come accross this assertion that SCD kids are of hiher IQ than the regular kid. I wonder if its true. My five year old is a gifted child and always shocks us with what he knows but then i may just be biased because of my emotions and his condition. Can anyone tell me their experience concerning school performance or general smarts?

Your question made me smile. I definitely have heard of people labelling SCD kids as smart. When I was growing up, one of my teachers told me that having SCD was a blessing because it made me so smart. I've always maintained good grades in school, but I think it's more because of the work ethic, love of education and desire for success that my parents instilled in me that helped me to maintain a great GPA, and not because I have Sickle cell. In nursing school, it was especially difficult to cope with SCD and sickle cell, and I always knew to get started on my assignments early because one will can never tell when another crises will hit. And when in school, I always studied in the hospital (half the time because I was so bored!). If anything, I think SCD has made me more determined to succeed in life, regardless of the obstacles. That's my story.
I CANNOT AGREE MORE, IT IS THE ADAPTABILITY WE LEARN BY BEING SICK. YES OUR MINDS ARE WORKING ALL THE TIME.
hmmm, well me personally, I've always could read very well at a young age, as far as school..... I dropped out, but check this, i passed all of my graduation exams before I was even a senior(plz dont ask why I dropped out >.>), then I got my GED before anybody else in my class, I actually went back to my GED class to holla at my teacher 3 months afterwards and some of the students were STILL in there when I was there. Now in college and so far I'm doing real good. I've never really heard anyone say that I'm smart cuz I have SC so I don't know what to tell ya, but hey, I'm not making any objections to that assumption ^-^
I was in magnet schools all the way from Kindergarten to my senior year, and graduated with a 4.1 GPA. But i don't think its because of my sickle cell, I think its because of my work ethic and to prove to people that I can do anything I want. I would try twice as hard as anyone else because I knew that I was gonna have a crisis soon, so if I stay ahead of the game, then I wont have that much catching up to do. Im in college on a full ride. I not sure about sickle cell being a blessing and all, but I cant imagine my life without it.
I think we are 'smarter' bcuz we strive harder. Me personally, I odnt want tSCD to be an excuse for not doing well in school. and You can ALWAYS depend on your mind esp when ur body is in pain.

Generelly this just might be tru bcuz my bor has scd too and we seem to be the 'academic ones in the fam vs our other bro that doesnt have scd ...
Just like Awadeen said, my mind is always on the run and anything i fix it on no matter how hard or how long it takes i get it done. i was born with the 'arts' but i ended up Graduating in the sciences because my dad told me I couldn’t study sciences. I did it just to prove I could. I have not thrown away my gift I still use it to this day. But it shouldn't surprise us if SS is gifted because if one sense (eyes) is impaired the other (ear) becomes more sensitive.
