Hi I have an uncle who is about 80 years old and he has ss. I also have a son whom was born with sickle cell as well. He is about 10 years old now. When he was having pain crisis upon pain crisis, the doctors presrcibbed him hydroxyurea and at that time I did know any information about this drug and was very skepticle about him taking it as well. At that time the doctors told me if I do not let him take this drug he will not live that long and that people's live expectany with sickle cell is about age 40. Me and my husband were very devastated when they told us this and we told them that they are not god and it is up to god to chose when it is time to no longer be here on earth. However we did up ending to let him take this medication but for only six months. When he was on this medication, sadly to say we didn't really see any improvement as far as his pain crisis. We eventually took him off and now give him herbal supplement along with a very good diet with involves fruits, vegatble, whole grains, good proteins, low sugar and lots of water which we measure every day. Hope you found this reply helpful. God Bless
My mom is 65 and she has SS. She is doing very well in her "old" age.
I did a book review on my youtube channel on a book about sickle cell written by a older lady with SIckle Cell, Judy Johnson, i beleive she will be 70 this year.
I oldest person I knew and she just recently died April 13, 2013. She was at the age of 49.
