Hello everyone on the People living with Sickle cell website. I am a new member who has been very surprised to find this site. I was completely blown away with all the info on the site. I have been living with Sickle Cell Disease for 40 years suffering pain crisises for 38 of those years. I arrogantly believed that I knew everything about my illness but in the last few months I've experienced things that had never happened to me before and started searching the internet for more and more info. That's how I came across this site and I found more than enough info. Until 3 days ago I didn't know that iron overload could kill me!! I've had well over a hundred transfusions in my life and my hematologist told me a few times about some of the things that could happen because of the iron overload but I wasn't to concered and didn't take it that seriously until watching the video of the father who lost his daughter to iron overload who was warning people about the dangers of iron overload. Well after learning that she passed with a count of 6000 I saw my hematologist the following day after being spooked by what I had learned asking all types of questions and learning that my count is a little above 4000!!! Well needless to say I FULLY I mean "FULLY" UNDERSTAND the dangers of iron overload and will be no matter how nasty or unpleasant the Xjade is(the medicine that I already had on my nightstand to take excess iron out of my system) i will be taking it. Now a few things about myself I'm born and raised in North Philly I now live in San Diego. Thats it for now I gotta go lay down I'm hurting a little right now and my meds are kicking in. Reese
