Click here for a review of a recent paper on hydroxurea.
Those of you who are on Nicosan can help us by documenting how well it is helping you. The side effects if any. That way more experience and confidence can be gained.

LOL...Angela...that's the same thing my dumb hematologist said, but I ignored him and started Nicosan anyway. Your doc can't legally advise you to take an herbal remedy...he has to cover his ass in case you come around and sue him. But he's not the one dealing with this disease...u are! Hydrea is crap, the side effects aren't even worth the cure, and it's not as effective. I've been 8 months pain free...no crises at all, and can't even remember the last time I was sick.

I dont take hydrea(for short) but i was supposed to
the reason I dnt take it is cause it has too many negatives (possible side effects etc) and not enough good things that are supposed to happen.

But what it does is that it makes hemoglobin F in your body, which is what babies make before they are born. The the H*F is suppsed to chnage to H*A. so you would have less Sickled cells.

here are some other drugs your doc may not know about but do help ppl wit SCD. You can google them and see if you want to try them out.

Nicosan*this is the one I'm trying out
