How to assist a friend with Sickle Cell

Hi, I have a female friend with Sickle Cell. She goes in and out of the hospital several times per year. She has a good support system. She has a college education, a full time job and she is a single parent of 2 children. The problem is that every time she goes into the hospital she gets behind on her bills because "she makes too much $ for any type of public assistance." Does any one know of temporary assistance for cases like this? She is wants to be able to work and take care of her children but some times it is better to stay home and collect from the government. I don't know what to tell her. Your assistance would be greatly appreciated.

Can I say, you sound like a great friend, seeking out a site that has working 'Warriors', living this same see-saw life. I sound like the mirror image of your friend. The problem is, for many jobs short term only pay between 60-80 percent your gross income, while you are out of short-term disability. Supplemental insurance is great advice. She may also want to look into Work at Home options, I am trying to make the transition in career that will allow me a bit more flexibility, to suit my families needs. May I ask, what does she do? Can she start her business or contract herself out to small business. As you can see, having this dsease, you need creativity to surivive. I wish all the best, and tell her to keep her head up, and "keep it Pimpin Pimpin" as Katt would say.

It's a supplemental insurance plan, that pays you for every day you are sick, in the hospital or away from your job. I pay like $30 a month, and if I'm in the ED, I get paid $50/day. Med Surg 100/day or in the ICU I get 250/day. The money is paid directly to you...you just have to get your doctor to fill out the form and you can scan it or send it them. You even get paid for days after your hospitalization, when you haven't gone back to work yet...for convalescence. There is a 3-6 month payout for pre existing conditions, but it flew by quick, and now I just collect my $$$ whenever I'm in the hospital. It helps to pay the bills and whatever financial issues that crop up while sick. Check it out at http://combined.com
