i have been on hydrea for a lil while now, and i have no complaints about it, no side effects that i have noticed, and i seem to be having less crisis since i been on it, however i think that this is one of those things that very per individual, so your results might be different from mine, but i would recommend it to a fellow warrior, and another alternative is nicosan, u can look into that as well. the one con that i did speak to my doctor about is that you shouldnt have kids while you are on it cause it messes with your sperm, but it doesnt do any permanent damage, and when you do want to have kids, just go off it for a few months and you should be ok, being that you are 17, i dont think you are too worried abut that now tho..good luck and i wish u good health

different people have different reactions, if any. i had my son on it for only a few days, he is now doing monthly transfusions.i know some that have improved while on it. some that it makes sick. - i guess you just have to pray about it, and weigh if your quality of life is bearable, or if you need intervention. if you need an intervention, then try it...you can always stop if it does not seem to benefit you.

I was on it a few years back and had some side effects. Major headaches and other complications. so i stopped taking it. I recently went back on it a few months ago to try it out again and have no complaints yet but we'll see what happens.

Hi my daughter has been on hydrea for a year now, her paincrisis went from 6 a year, to 3 or 4 before hydrea she had but 5 blood transfusions a year and since hydrea she only had 1. so our experience with hydrea is very positive, but everyone is different. but i think it's worth trying

HELLO, HOPE EVERYONE  IS BLESS IN JESUS NAME. HAD ANYONE HAD PROTEIN IN THEIR KIDNEY AND DID ANY ONE GO THUR A KIDNEY BISOPHY,  HOW DID THIS AFFECT YOU, PROS AND CONS THANK YOU JEROME PLESDE REPLY.

Hi, they found protein in my urine but thy didnt find anything wrong with my kidneys and I found that to be peculiar, if u find any more information in connection to these please post, I would really like to get more info too.

jerome, kidney biopsy isn't a big deal at all and you should definitely have it done if there is protein in the urine so that the docs know what to do.  protein in the urine can lead to kidney failure if it is ignored.  the biopsy is with a small needle and, depending on the situation, you might be able to go home the same day.  the kidneys sit in the mid-back near the skin by the ribs so they don't have to go far to find them.  i hope this helps.  you should definitely have it done b/c kidney failure and dialysis is no fun and is much worse than having a biopsy.

Hi Jerome, my daughter (13) has been on hydroxyurea for 2 years now when she was bout 7 we tried it and she got terrible headache but now it's goin very good she use to get a paincrisis every 2 to tree months now it twice a year so its a big improvement. I guess you can try it see if it helps you.
