I have been in the hospital since Monday night. I actually had to come into the emergency room on Friday night for a fever and pain. The doctors gave me 5 of morphine and toradol, The pain went down a little but i lied and said I wasn't hurting anymore and i wanted to go home. I went home on Norco and was still in pain by Monday morning. After my mom begged me to go to the hospital i went and they admitted me.Right now I am on Fentanyl and i feel like i want to give up!!!! The pain just all of a sudden it got worse. What do i do when i cant take it anymore and you feel like giving up on life???

If you are in the hospital, and you are on painkillers and still in pain, then obviously they need to either switch the narcotic or increase your dose. I hate using Fentanyl because it rarely works for my pain. Have you ever used Dilaudid? that's the only narc that really helps me out when I'm in full blown crises.

Please have the nurse call your doctor or the covering doc and get you some more pain coverage. you can't get better until the pain gets under control. Don't accept a low dose...they have to keep titrating it up until your pain is controlled! Ask for a bolus or something.....don't just suffer in silence---say something! Noone can know what you are going through if you don't speak up.

Never...ever give up. EVER! You can't let sickle cell overcome you. When it gets so overwhelming, sometimes I curl up in a fetal position and cry my eyes out. I moan, I groan (sounds surprisingly help to release some of the tension ). I mentally go to my happy place, a memory of somewhere or someone that just makes you feel peaceful and calm. I try deep breathing, I pray, mental guided imagery, muscle relaxation (one by one relax every muscle in your body starting from your toes and working your way up). Music also helps.

Please ask for some more pain meds...that's the first thing. And keep asking until your pain is under control.
