I've had several. The first was in 1993. I had Malaria, Cholera and Pneumonia when I was 13 in Nigeria. I had passed out about 10 blocks from home when I was walking home from the bus stop. One of the women on the street saw me and carried me all the way home and my parents rushed me to the hospital. I don't remember much from that time, but I was in the hospital for 3 weeks.

The second was in 2001. I had gotten acute chest syndrome, and it was so bad that I was placed on BIPAP. In addition my liver enzymes were so high, I was beyond jaundiced, and had to have my a hemapheresis done. This is like dialysis, but they drew out all my blood and infused me with 6 units of fresh blood. My sister said the blood coming out of my body was almost black, the doc said there was no oxygen and the cells had been completely broken down (I had very few viable red blood cells).

The third was just last year, right before I started Nicosan. It was the flu turned to PNA, turned to Acute chest, and I had to be placed on the Ventilator for 2 days as they forced oxygen to my lungs. When I was extubated, I was so grateful to be able to breath normally! I was in in the hospital for 10 days that time.

Most of the time, when I get really, really sick, I don't remember anything at all. I think the forgetfulness is my mind's response to how frightening the whole encounter must have been.

What about you?
Near death? Oh, I have had that. I think I was about twenty years old and very rascally. I use to party, booze and flirt a lot, and suddenly my left leg became immobile and swollen at the side of my knee and it started swelling and one day ruptured: my parents found out very late that it was osteomyelitis and the orthopedic doctor said I needed surgery. A local anesthesia was used during the surgery and I found myself out of my body. I could like feel my surrounding like a blind man because I couldn’t actually see it. I felt the doctor cutting and then I started falling into a very dark pit with the feeling of gravity pulling down hard on me, and then I heard these taunting voices laughing at me: honestly the feeling was frightful, so much I heard myself pleading to God (then I wasn’t a born again Christian but I knew there is a big eye up there who controls everything except me). This experience happened three times and I was back. The doctor who did the surgery later asked me if I was a heavy drinker and I told him yes. And I also discovered that local anesthesia can give you this kind of near death-like experience I had, anyway this experience, a prisoner in my ward who I noticed was always reading his bible and how my wound suddenly healed without the antibiotics I refused taking led to my conversion. Also my crises where so severe my parents thought I would never come out of it alive but I always did. Another day I was alone just having a nap upstairs and my mum was downstairs when my heart just suddenly stopped beating: it was like a dream but I knew I was dying and I was just struggling inside for breath until something happened and I just jumped up from the bed and ran downstairs to stay with my mum: I didn’t tell her what happened then but some years later.
I have two stories. Ive never ever told anyone about his but I hope people can learn from it. In 2004 I had a catheter that stays under the skin for fluids and things because I have really bad veins. WELL...it got infected and the doctor that I saw put me on some antibiotics for a week and it came back after than even worse than it was before. One day I had a bad pain crisis, I took my meds and went to bed. This next part was told to me by my mom because after I went to bed I went blacked out. My mom said while I was out I started vomiting and my eyes rolled back and she could not wake me up she called the ambulace and they took me to a hospital and they figured out that the catheter was so badly infected that they infection went all through out my blood it messed up my eyes till I was cross eyed, to my brain where they said I had a stroke, my lungs which one collapesed and the worst part it caused me to have osteromilitis in my hip. The original doctor STILL refused to let the docs take out the cather and they did it anyway. I had part of my hip removed twice. It left me in a wheel chair. Its been a long time since and In not in a wheelchair anymore, I can walk and talk and now if you saw me you would never be able to know. but what I have learned is that dont trust someone 100 percent. It does not matter even if its a doctor. It turns out that the doctor who refused to remove the cather did this to another girl my age with sickle cell but she didnt make it out of the hospital. Another thing that I learned is cathers are not something that can stay in the body forever. When and if they get infected its best to take them out than take a chance on your life.
About a month before my 29th birthday, I had what I thought was a mild crisis and went to hospital, hoping to be out by the next day. I woke up 2 weeks later hooked up to a ventilator. It was a very scary experience. Was in hospital for about a month in total. They said it was an acute chest crisis. I remember some weird 'dreams' from that period and it still freaks me out thinking about it.
Yikes, that sounds like a very scary experience!! Were you in a coma or medically induced sedation? I'm happy to know that you conquered that and is doing well now.
yea i was bout 11 and i got Pavo Virus i believe it was called and was in desperate need of a blood transfusion, well the problem was that my folks are Jehovah Witnesses so they didnt want me to have a transfusion, so they had to go to court with the doctors, i barely remember anything except this preacher coming to visit and eventually seeing a bag of blood on the lil IV holder, havent told anybody that and honestly i dont know how to feel bout my folks not wanting to give a transfusion, i mean yea thats their religious beliefs but still.....
MAN I THOUGHT I WAS THE ONLY ONE, DONT REMEMBER MUCH,CAUSE I WAS IN A COMA FOR SOMETIME WHEN I WAS ABOUT 8YRS OLD, WHEN I CAME TO MY NANA WAS AT THE BED SIDE PRAYING FOR ME.
IT'S FEELS GOOD TO TELL THIS AFTER SO MANY YEARS, MOST PEOPLE USE TO THINK I WAS CRAZY
i did after i gave birth to my son back in 2004. ended up with postpartum cardiomyopathy. i was placed into a medically induced coma and my fam called the priest and my fam from out of town YIKES. i dont remember anything but everyone reminds me i was almost gone =(
