I've written an article that explains this condition

Whenever I have these symptoms I know exactly what I need to do next - go and grab a big glass of water, knock it down as quickly as possible. Repeat, repeat, and repeat again.

Her liver is struggling with sickling blood not travelling through smoothly, and so her body needs a little extra help to flush out the eliminatory organs of her system. Depending on her size a good 2 1/2 to 4 litres of water (NOT tea/coffee/soda - they leach hydration OUT of the body!) each day.

She'll pee like a racehorse for the first 3 or 4 days whilst her body readjusts to ingesting so much liquid, but after that the situation will be immensely improved. Her eyes will become clearer and her pee will become the pale colour it's meant to be.

The liver, gall bladder, kidneys, bowel and spleen are all linked, and work together to push toxins out of the body. They all need plenty of water to function well. If she moans and says she hates the taste of water, or that she just can't drink more than a couple of glasses a day, let her know that if the situation worsens she could end up with full-blown jaundice, liver damage and blood in her pee from kidney stones or gall bladder issues.

No, I'm not trying to scare her by being unecessarily mean by saying all this. It's because I've been there and done that. Many years back I finally got the message, and upped my intake of liquids by about 300%. Wow. What a difference it made!

Mild yellowing of eyes is common among sickle cell. Its called icterus, it is because of destruction of red blood cells at higher speed than usual. You just have to pay attention that it does not get moderate.

Jaundice does occur with many of us. If her eyes and urine color are suddenly more yellowish than normal that suggests that there is something new going on with her liver and she should report this to her doctor so that he/she can check it out. My eyes only tend to yellow when I'm crising in my liver and it usually requires hospitalization. Many of us however have a persistant yellowing of the eyes. If her eyes are always yellow tell her not to be afraid and like marcus said, drink more water. If her eyes are suddenly yellow then she should go and see her doctor soon.
Cheers

Yes, this is very common with sickle cell warriors. It is called jaundice. Have her increase her water intake.
