 SICKLE CELL NUTRITION STUDY                                                         

Low nitric oxide in people with sickle cell anemia can lead to pulmonary hypertension and leg ulcers.  Carnitine is a nutrition supplement that may raise nitric oxide.  Researchers from The University of Memphis are doing research study that looks at the nitric oxide levels in people with sickle cell anemia.

 Who can be on the study? 

• Adults  between 18-60 years old who have sickle cell (SS).
• English speaking 
• Willing to participate and come to the University of Memphis 3 to 5 times to do the test. 
• Non smoker 

What will I have to do?

• Give a blood sample 3 times. 
• Have weight, height, and body fat measured. 
• Write down food intake 3 times.

What are the risks?

• There are no risks related to carnitine. There is a slight risk of infection to having blood drawn.

 What are the benefits?

• You will help us learn about nitric oxide in people with sickle cell anemia.
• You will get $20 and a snack each time you have blood drawn/visit.
