How has living with sickle cell made an impact on your life?
Everyone with Sickle Cell is born with it, so it's all we know. I try to not let it control my life, so going to a university and being on the Dean's List with a 4.0 GPA, enjoying the outdoors plus photography, and being around my family and friends is how I keep myself healthy, safe and happy. I was diagnosed with Avascular Necrosis of both hips as a child, Pulmonary Arterial Hypertension in 2007, and went through two total hip replacements in 2008, but I still enjoy life daily even though I endure the pain of Sickle Cell daily. Being on oxygen 24/7 has definitely helped with the hospital and emergency room visits over the past seven years. I've known many people throughout my life with Sickle Cell who have died young, so I feel blessed to be alive, even when doctors told me in 2007 that I only had two years to live. So, I feel responsible to live my life the best I know how, especially for the people with Sickle Cell that died way too soon.
What are you hoping to gain by joining the site?
I hope to gain the knowledge of how to live life healthy and safe, plus gain friendships with people who are like myself, and know what I'm going through living with Sickle Cell and the diseases that have come along because of the disease.
