Friends,

I would love you to share your thoughts on this issue. I am 40 years old and seriously afflicted with massive ulcers on both the medial and lateral side of the left ankle.

What has been most bothersome is that these ulcers are redefining who I am... what i can do, how I am construed in the corporate sector.

There are times  that I want my life back so badly that I even contemplated a possible amputation of the left leg.

What remedies are known that can alleviate this terrible suffering?

Regards

Eton

wow, i had a blood clot in m lower left extremetiy and suffered post thrombotic syndrome. my left leg has been swollen for 4years now and i have had 2 ulcers in the past 4 years. one of which just healed this february/march

i got special tedhose/cmpression stocking to wear on my leftleg, thought painful to wear, it helps alot... has your doctor discussed this with you?

i dont know the degree of your ulceration but at one point i was put on antibiotics just in case it was infected.

also i was  on biweekly blood transfusions for about two months so that i could get more oxygen to the ulcer (the ulcer was by my left ankle.)

for daily treatment, i used a saltwater solution to clean it then i left a gauze in there so thatt he yellow tuff would come out.

the wound care specialist at childrens as well as the one at Geaorgetown were very helpful and kinda  used me as a lab rat to see what would work so I thank God that it healed so quickly.

I still wear the compression stockings and elavate my legs as often as possible to prevent another one because i know what youre going through, i had the same thougt of just getin rid of the enitre leg, but you just gottta have faith and out in work on your leg to heal the ulcers .

I hope this helped. What are some treatments youve had in tryin to heal the ulcer?

I'm suffering from leg ulcers also. I have one on the inside left ankle that started in 2006, took 3 months to heal, and is beginning to open up again. I also have another one on the lateral side of my right foot that's a little more severe. I'm currently seeing a wound specialist once a week. So far, he has me using a debriding ointment every other day. My previous ulcer was healed using a uni boot. This clinic is doing something different. My Hematologist has sent me to get a full body blood exchange transfusion to get rid of the sickled cells in hopes that this will also aid in the healing process.

I understand how you feel about this getting in the way of your career goals. I'm 29, I've just graduated with my MS degree, and I'm dealing with finding employment in my field while working a temp job and making trips to the wound clinic once a week (on top of everything else life brings). These ulcers are painful and the meds I take for my crisis tend to just make me sleepy while the pain still lingers. I'm losing sleep and looking for some relief just as you are. The only thing I can recommend is to continue to keep your legs elevated and the wounds clean with antibacterial soap and ointment.

As far as your career goals, my suggestion is to find a way to work around the problem until you can get back on your feet. Maybe consider a work from home position if you can find one. I freelance as a Graphic Designer from time to time just to keep my skills up until I'm able to secure a job.

I know at times this can seem like the worse case scenario, but please don't resort to extreme measures to remedy this problem. Our bodies can only handle so much and a procedure like leg amputation can come with complications that could affect you much worse than the ulcers. Continue to take care of yourself, drink plenty of fluids, take your meds on time, get plenty of rest, and most importantly, Pray. After all is said and done, that's the best treatment!

Just to give you an update. I still have the same leg ulcer on my left ankle, but the one on my right foot has healed. I've found that taking 100 mg of Zinc and 2 mg of Copper have helped a lot. Also, my Dr. has prescribed Anagrolide and it has helped me in the past. I hope this helps if you're still suffering with a leg ulcer like I am.
