anyone?
I have had a successful pregnancy. I had my daughter at 33weeks via c-section. I had a lot of episodes during the pregnancy but my doctors were wonderful and supportive. Pain was managed using heat and massage, gas (like the one you get at the dentists) - it does take the edge off a little, iv fluids, blood transfusions and mild painkillers. It's amazing what our bodies can take when we really want something. Somehow I could stand the pain as long as my baby was ok.

Advice - it's possible if you have support from family and friends and doctors who know what they're doing. My doctor closely monitored me every week of the pregnancy.
thanks for the reply, wow you went 33 weeks! I've heard of using gas (nitric oxide) it's never been recomended to my fiance though.
Im not a women....but my cousin had a baby at the ultimate price.......please becareful

With all my pregnancy I did receive a blood transfusion but only with my last one that I had to a epidural! I know it was dangerous 4 me 2 give birth 4 times but I did have alot a support & still do I wudnt advise anyone with sickle cell anemia to do what I did b cuz the Lord had 2 b with me on all this,I have wonderful understanding children who keeps a bright smile on my face!
yes the Lord truly was and is with you God bless. I can't imagin what the docters were telling you with all these pregnancies. what did you do for pain?
Do you think that you were able to have natural births because of your buildup tolerance for pain due to past sickle cell crisis or was the labor pain just not as bad sickle cell pain?

I have sickle cell beta of a light form (normal hematocrit, no blood transfusions, occasional pain episodes but rarely severe).

I had my daughter at 38 weeks by natural birth.  She's almost 15 now.  I hadn't planned it, it was just a happy accident.  My pregnancy was pretty normal.  I had one blood transfusion midway when my hematocrit dropped to 28% and my doctor said the baby would die if it got lower.  I had another one right after birth. I had blood tests every week and visited my doctor every four weeks.  I stopped going to work 2 days before labour because my belly became somehow restless.  I actually did nothing for pain.  I'm used to pain and my labour was easy, lasted about 6 hours.  Trouble was ahead at the end though.  During the last hour my daughter started choking by the umbilical cord which was wrapped around her neck.  I started pushing and she wouldn't come out.  I heard someone say "prepare for c-section" but at the very last minute my doctor managed to pull her out (using that device that grabs the baby's head).  She had anoxia, was blue and didn't cry at first but the pediatricians managed to keep her alive.  After a week's stay at the pediatric clinic she was fine and we went home together.

So after this experience the one advice I'd give to mothers-to-be is:

PLEASE have your babies in hospitals, NOT at home!

A perfectly normal pregnancy can go very wrong at the very last minute.  My baby would have died or suffered severe brain damage if I wasn't at the university hospital with the best pediatric clinic in the country and a professor as my doctor.

Well for me it wasnt plan and i was 40 week when i give birth to a beautiful baby girl. well during my pregnancy i was in and out of hospital because of stress and edema oh and my Bp was low most of the times, i did  C section because my water broke i dont knw when, i only have one child and my advice to you couple out there is do what you think is best for you.

Hey James; I just wanted to give you my personal testimony. I have two children one boy and one girl. My first pregancy was a blessing and I was very happy. I was 18 when I first got pregant and the doctors told me all my life I could not have children due to the risk. My sickle cell was always very bad and it keep me in the hostipal. But I always knew that I wanted to be a mother and so I did. I was not sick and had few crises during my first pregancy. I went to a high risk pregancy clinic twice a week for montoring of the baby stress levels and to keep a close eye on my blood levels. I went full term and delivered with no problems. My son was 7lbs 3 oz. My second pregancy was a little different. I was 24 when I had my second child and the pregancy went good but the delivery was hard. No pain crises during this pregancy period but the delivery was really bad. My daughter did not want to come out and that sent me into crises. They could not give me anything for the pain because I was in the middle of the dilivery. The labor lasted 16 hours and I had to have surgey right after to repair my bottom from the tears. My body took a long time to recover from this and one year later I almost died from the complactaions from this pregancy. My body never recovered fully from the truma and I suffered.

I am now 39 years old and I have managed really well. I have been hospital free for four years now with only over the counter med's to manage the pain. I say if you want children go for it. Get a good team of doctors and family support and go for it. Everybody is different and listen to your body.

Thank you fror your testimony, im his wife and he just want to go about it in the right way, um he wants to see a high risk doctor an a regular ob/gyn we have already talked with my reguular ob/gyn and she said that if i got pregnant that i would have to see her once a week from the first month to the time i had the baby, and see the high risk doctor once a month, im just looking for a hemotologist that will support the pregnancy.

well i have three lil ones. i think its best to have your lil ones with someone who does nt have scd. i didnt plan my pregnacy. i was in and out of the hospital each time i was with child. thanks to the big man upstairs that my kids father didnt have scd. doing each pregnacy was different for me. my first one i was in and out the hospital alot towards the ending of my pregnacy i got my first blood tranfusion. you have more doctors visit then anyone else and you are a high risk i had my first child at 34 weeks and my secound one at 36 weeks and my last one was at 38 weeks. if you gonna bring a child(ren) into this world please get your partner tested to make sure they dont have scd because i dont think no one want their child(ren) to go threw all the thing that use scd people go threw as a kid or adult thats one of the reason i got my tubs tied and is single now when i found out that me and my ex wasnt going to be together any more i figured that was the best decision to make. i think you should wait tell u are married before having lil ones cause its hard to be a single parent trying to raised your lil ones with sickle cell
