Thank God he's been well. He and his twin sister who also has SCD (their names are Ahmad and Ruqayyah) both have been well. Neither of them have had any pain crises but they both have had blood transfusions and hospital stays due to fever. My daughter doesn't take the nicosan though. It seems that she got a rash when she tried to take it so my wife and I decided to not have her take it for now. But my son hasn't had any negative reactions. They go to their hematologist in a few weeks and we will be able to see if his blood count is any different.
I decided to try it because though they haven't had any major complications due to the SCD I didn't want to wait then feel guilty I didn't try everything at my disposal. Their hematologist does not know, I'm considering informing them next week when they have their next appointment. We also give them l-glutamine supplements because that is supposed to help as well. There currently clinical trials on the effectiveness of glutamine, here's one

I hope the glutamine is as effective as the nicosan appears to be because it will be a lot easier to obtain. Because it looks like it will be a long time before the nicosan is fda approved and available here in the US.
